Southside Stories: Our North Star Journey

  • St. Peter's AME Church 401 East 41st Street Minneapolis, MN, 55409 United States (map)

Greg McMoore is a lifelong South Minneapolis resident and current board member of Hennepin History Museum. He recently completed an Arthur C. McWatt Fellowship to further explore the story of his family’s “North Star Journey.”

Greg will share the story about his Wallace family ancestors: their migration from enslavement in Virginia; arrival to freedom in Hastings, Minnesota; and then their final destination in south Minneapolis. The family’s first Minneapolis home was at 416 E 25th St, which was destroyed by the construction of I-35W in the 1960s. This was ground zero of the negative impact to the African American community in south Minneapolis and the eventual development of segregated communities.

Participants will hear a presentation about this story, share a meal, and engage in conversation and storytelling about family life and community in south Minneapolis. The setting will appropriately be at St. Peter’s AME church, a bedrock institution in the community.

This event is free, reservations are requested, but not required, to help give organizers an accurate head count for food. Reservations
