Quarter Million Dollar Grant for Phelps Activities Council
MINNEAPOLIS – (JANUARY 27, 2022) The Phelps Activities Council in South Minneapolis will receive a grant totalling $250,000 from the National Football League (NFL)/Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Grassroots field Grant Program to refurbish Phelps Field Park neighborhood football fields in South Minneapolis, it was announced yesterday. The Phelps Athletic Council is working with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to raise an additional $1.2 million for full renovation of the field. Phelps Field park is a block away from George Floyd square, in a neighborhood that has been at the forefront of racial justice activism for the past two years.
Phelps Field Park is an important park in an important part of Minneapolis. Since 2018, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has invested nearly $1.5 million in park improvements, including a new playground that opened in 2020, and a new splash pad that will open this summer.
“We are excited to help bring Phelps Park a field that will serve youth in Minneapolis and provide a place for sports, recreation and the growth of football in our region,” said Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf. “We are proud to be part of this community and to deliver this grant that will create a meaningful impact in Minneapolis.”
“We are excited about helping to bring resources to a neighborhood that has gone through so much in the past two years,” said Peter McLaughlin Executive Director of LISC Twin Cities. “This renovated field will provide opportunities for young people to compete in safe, healthy, structured environments.”
The next Grassroots funding cycle begins January 31, 2022 and the deadline for proposal submissions is May 31, 2022. Details on how to apply will be available here beginning January 31.
