May Groundbreaking Planned for Satori Village on W. Broadway

We need affordable housing, but too much of it in one area is not well balanced,” Baylor said. “With market-rate units, employers will come to town and the area becomes what I like to say is like every other part of Minneapolis that has housing options that can attract everyone.

The North Side of Minneapolis hasn’t seen a housing and commercial development quite like Satori Village in more than a decade, according to developer Tim Baylor. North Minneapolis has a large population of Black residents. Development in North Minneapolis is often challenging due to decades-long, deeply imbedded racism and racial inequity in the Twin Cities. JADT Development is led by Tim Baylor, a Black developer.

Baylor told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he will break ground on the $68 million apartment and retail complex next month at the corner of West Broadway and Bryant Avenue North.

He owns 10 McDonald’s franchises, including one on the North Side, and started living in Minneapolis 41 years ago when he played with the Minnesota Vikings in 1979. There will be two more phases with 78 units for senior living and 26 loft apartments, along with more than 3,000 square feet of commercial retail space. Part of the project will offer affordable housing.

WHY

The combination of affordable and market-rate rental options is badly needed in north Minneapolis, said Baylor. Minneapolis’ North Side absorbed more than 350 units of affordable housing in 10 years but developed no new market-rate apartments during the same period.
