UVM’s Fleming MOA inspires
A recent visit to the University of Vermont’s Fleming Museum of Art brought inspiration for the multitudes of ways genuine introspection, examination and action are needed in order to reckon with past harm. Museum leaders, in imagining future cultural and artistic possibilities, call upon the following values: build trust, maintain transparency and become a responsive space.
The Fleming Reimagined: Confronting Institutional Racism and Historical Oppression contains the following exhibits through December 10: Learning Studio, Abstracts, Storytelling Salon and Absence: Seeing and Unseeing the Fleming’s Collection.
Various mechanisms for feedback, input and reflection have been installed throughout the museum and online. Perhaps there are ways this model can be employed in other arenas. ~ Christina Beck
