A People's Assembly on Safety & Care

  • 3032 Minnehaha Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55406 United States (map)

About this People’s Assembly:

A People’s Assembly is a gathering of individuals who share conditions, if not equally, meeting with the intent on cooperating towards common goals through discussion and attentive listening.

At an Assembly we come together to define conditions, study shared problems, name solutions, build and identify towards the next steps we want to take together.

Before colonization and despite it, public assemblies were our primary form of political decision making in our communities, across ethnicity and geography.

At this Assembly we’ll talk about mutual care and safety in our community. Solutions and actions we want to take towards real safety in Minneapolis, not occupation and institutional punishment as experienced through MPD and other elements of the carceral state. While our conversations will, no doubt, focus on Ballot Question #2 and alternatives to policing we recognize that this discussion began long before the vote and, by design, must continue long after, no matter the outcome.

In our communities we are often our own first responders when a crisis happens. How can we find the care we need within our families, friends, and neighbors? How can we increase power in our communities and decrease reliance on police? A neighborhood where everyone feels safe and protected begins with care and accountability.

Utilizing our R-A-M tool-kit, which focuses on the conditions of Healing, Justice, Space, Culture, and Housing, Confluence Studio is hosting a People’s Assembly towards Care and Safety on Sunday, October 24th. This gathering is organized by Studio members and friends in support of the efforts of Reclaim the Block, Black Visions, and Yes4MPLS. There will be art, music, and food produced by fellow neighbors, and discussion between us all facilitated towards collectively imagining future agreements; more vibrant, more humane, more understanding and compassionate towards the complexities of living in diverse community.
