1) How long has Sequeerity been operating? How is it going?
Sequeerity has been operating since 2019, about one year in service, and it’s going well. They pride themselves in being a liaison between the queer community and straight people. The owners of Sequeerity wanted to create access to safe training methods. They found that most security firms were/are reactive; and they wanted to be different.
2) How did the name Sequeerity come about? It was a play on words. Sequeerity is both eye-catching and an icebreaker. The name itself serves as a form of de-escalation.
3) What are some benefits of having a queer, POC, and women-based security company in MN?
It can make people feel comfortable. Event attendees become more relaxed when they see the staff being themselves and presenting a polite presence. The workers feel comfortable also in their self-expression at work.
4) What are de-escalation and situational awareness? What are some key takeaways from these classes that you offer? De-escalation is the calming of a contentious situation. The Sequeerity team prepares their team for de-escalation by telling them, “it starts with you.” They ask team members to be mindful of their emotions and check in with their emotional intelligence before work. Situational awareness involves learning to be aware of your surroundings, pay attention, and greet everybody. Situational awareness is also learning to execute human compassion and acknowledge someone’s human existence. It requires learning to keep your head on a swivel.
Some key practices and takeaways from these classes include practicing scenarios in new environments, knowing where your exits are, and looking for awkward body language. Humans are humans, and we are all walking around with things, do not forget humanity.

2020 was full of new changes and unexpected situations no one could have predicted. There were new issues people had to deal with and old ones that were back in the spotlight.

Our goal is to create and maintain safe spaces for everyone, especially for the LGBTQIA+ community.”
The media showed us a lot of unrest and left many no longer feeling safe. While we still can’t predict the future we can help you feel safe.
